Granada and the Alhambra Palace are little more than an hour away from Cueva Aked. It’s motorway for most of the journey, though there is an exceptional cross country route that goes from Guadix. This route brings you out almost at the Alhambra and it’s worth the drive for those who have the time and have had enough of motorway driving. The route takes you through many hillside villages and across mountains that are beautiful. There are many stopping places where you can enjoy a picnic and listen to the bubbling river as it passes at your feet, or you can have a cool beer with tapas in one of the many small bars and restaurants along the way.
For those who find motorway driving okay then the A92 will take you to Granada, but once you reach this beautiful city it is better to park and walk. There are many ways to enter this magnificent place, you can drive right to the Alhambra and park for the day, but you will be charged. Or you can park for free outside the Albacin (an ancient area of the city) and walk through the narrow, culture rich environment that is still very Spanish and where much of the architecture still holds the Moorish features that were laid down in this area, almost a thousand years ago.
There is much that can be said about the Alhambra and the Albacin, but there is also a magic in finding out for yourself about this amazing place. Enough to say you will need a full day to totally explore the Alhambra alone, the rest of Granada can be left for another day.
